GLA, through our full schedule of educational seminars and classes; our resource library, and our network of over 500 volunteer and member attorneys, provides legal assistance to musicians, songwriters, photographers, filmmakers, painters, poets, graphic designers, actors, theatre companies, dance troupes, museums and artists from many other disciplines. LAWYER REFERRAL SERVICE: Our lawyer referral service operates statewide and refers artists and arts organizations to attorneys for consultation on a wide-variety of arts-related issues, including copyright, contract review, labor / employment, immigration, general corporate matters, nonprofit formation, tax and First Amendment issues, among others.

FREE LEGAL CLINICS:
GLA's monthly legal clinics provide an opportunity for artists and arts organizations to seek advice on arts-related legal issues in a half-hour appointment with one of our volunteer attorneys. In order to attend one of our free legal clinics, you must register in advance. Clinic sessions are by appointment only and are subject to scheduling availability. MEDIATATION AND ARBITRATION:
Our mediation and arbitration services provide an efficient and economical alternative to litigation. GLA volunteer mediators and other resolution specialists help artists and arts organizations to resolve their arts-related controversies through conciliation, mediation, arbitration, meeting facilitation or early neutral evaluation.

The New Jersey Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (NJVLA) provides referrals to their volunteer pro-bono attorneys. The attorneys can give brief advice over the phone, via fax, or, if an artist qualifies, take on their entire case. NJVLA provides the following referral services to artists and arts and cultural organizations that have arts-related legal issues:

LEGAL LINE: A one-time phone call to a volunteer attorney usually of 30 to 60 minutes in length. This is available to anybody, regardless of their income. 

LAW FAX: A document review service whereby a volunteer attorney will review a contract or other legal document of up to three pages in length. This is available to anybody, regardless of their income. Note: please do not fax us your documents, we will not review them. We provide referrals to volunteer attorneys, who will review your documents.


FULL-SERVICE: For those clients who meet the income eligibility requirements, NJVLA will attempt to match them with a volunteer attorney who will provide legal representation for a specific matter. Utah Lawyers for the Arts (ULA) refers qualifying artists and art organizations to attorneys licensed in the State of Utah who provide free or low cost services in art-related matters, such as setting up nonprofit entities and seeking tax exempt status, negotiating various art-related contracts, handling contract disputes involving art or art services, and the censorship of art, among others.  ULA does not refer cases that are unrelated to art, such as landlord-tenant matters for living spaces, immigration, civil rights unrelated to art, family law, probate or bankruptcy. ULA serves low-income artists and arts organizations.  If you are seeking pro bono (free) legal services, proof of income is required.  ULA board of directors will consider cases of hardship if requested.  Artists and art organizations with income that prevents them from qualifying for free services, however, may be able to negotiate a lower hourly rate with an attorney who is a member of Utah Lawyers for the Arts.
