Mission Statement The Kentucky Arts Council is the state government agency responsible for developing and promoting support for the arts in Kentucky. Description of Program The Al Smith Individual Artist Fellowships are $7,500 awards given to professional Kentucky artists who have achieved a high level of excellence and creativity in their work and who have demonstrated significant achievement in their fields. Fellowships are based primarily upon the quality of the work samples submitted by the artist. Awards are unrestricted and may be used in any way to enhance the artist's career.

    Other Restrictions Fellowships are awarded annually on a rotating basis by discipline. Visual and Media artists may apply in odd numbered years for Fellowships. Composers, Choreographers, Writers and Interdisciplinary Artists may apply in even numbered years for Fellowships.

    No individual may receive more than one Al Smith Individual Artist Fellowship in their lifetime.
    - Fellowship recipients may not apply for an Emerging Artist Award.
    - Artists may apply only with work samples over which they had complete creative control.
    - Work created solely for commercial or instructional purposes is ineligible.
    - Multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary or multi-category applications are not eligible.
    - Translations are not eligible.
    - Collaborations and teams are not eligible to apply.
    - Artists may apply in one category and one medium only per application year. All work samples submitted must be representative of the selected category and medium.
    - With the exception of media arts, all work samples must have been completed within the past three years. Media artists may submit work completed within the past four years.

    Ideal Contact Month for New Application and Guidelines
    Selection Process/Criteria Panels of out-of-state, discipline-based, arts professionals will review all fellowship applications according to the performance expectations.

    The panel’s recommendations are forwarded to the arts council’s governing board for approval.
    Notification Process Applicants that receive a favorable recommendation enter into an agreement with the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Agreements cannot be altered without prior approval from the arts council's executive director.
