Mission Statement The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The National Park Service cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world. Lakeshore Mission Statement: Our shared mission is to conserve the ecosystem integrity of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, a mosaic of geologic, biologic, scenic, and historic features, offering opportunities for recreation, education, inspiration, and enjoyment forever.

Year Program Founded 1996
Description of Program Begun in 1996, the program continues to be open to professional visual artists whose work can be influenced and enhanced by the superb Lake Superior coastal scene. It provides the artists the opportunity to capture the many moods of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in their particular medium. The park offers a park residence (rent free) for up to four weeks during the months of September or October of each year. Limited reimbursement is available for in-park mileage and other out-of-pocket expenses during the artist's stay. Select from 3 accommodations: Sullivan's Creek Cabin, Sand Point Residence and Grand Marais Dorm.
Conditions/Public Service Requirements The artist is asked to contribute an example of their work and provide a minimum of two interpretive programs which will help advance the park mission. The artist is enrolled in the National Park Service Volunteer In Parks program.

Material/Process Applications must include the following items contained in a single envelope: 1. Your resume of no more than two pages, including a summary of your creative work. 2. Up to eight digital images on CD of your recent work that best expresses your style and ability, accompanied by a list of the sizes and media of the work. 3. A statement of what you hope to gain from a residency at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, with a specific explanation of how you propose to assist the Lakeshore to further its mission. 4. The preferred accommodation.

Ideal Contact Month for New Application and Guidelines
Selection Process/Criteria A jury of representatives from the art community, subject matter experts, and park employees select from the pool applicants. Selections will be made on the basis of merit and how their work can advance the mission of the Lakeshore and the National Park Service. Selections will be made without regard to race, religion, sex, disability, marital status, age, or national origin.
Notification Process The selection will be made by April 30, and all applicants will be notified of the outcome as soon as possible.
