Mission Statement |
The Jerome Foundation, created by artist and philanthropist Jerome Hill (1905-1972), seeks to contribute to a dynamic and evolving culture by supporting the creation, development, and production of new works by emerging artists. Description of Program |
The Jerome Foundation offers production grants of up to $30,000 to individual film,
video and digital production artists who reside within the five
boroughs of New York City. These grants support specific projects in experimental,
narrative, animation, and documentary genres. Only production and postproduction
expenses (not pre-production, marketing or distribution costs) are
supported. Additionally, the Programs do not support installations (which are
subsidized in other Foundation programs), projects connected to formal studies or
degree programs, or commercial, industrial, or informational work.
All programs at the Jerome Foundation support emerging artists whose work
shows promise of excellence. These artists will most often be in the early stages of
their careers and will not have had the support needed to achieve major
recognition for their work. This program, however, does not support students or
people with little to no background as principal creators of film, video, or digital
media. Factors used to assess whether or not an applicant is emerging include
production record/history, exhibition record, awards, grants, peer recognition,
career stage, and critical response to the work. |
Conditions/Public Service Requirements |
•Artists provided with support through this program must draw their grant funds within 18 months of notification of the grant. Production must also begin within the same 18-month timeframe. Exceptions to this policy, such as personal emergencies, must be approved by Foundation staff.
• GRANTEES MAY NOT SUBSTITUTE A DIFFERENT PROJECT FOR THE
FILM OR VIDEO FOR WHICH A GRANT WAS RECEIVED; doing so may
result in the Foundation recalling the grant. Any major changes to the nature
or scope of the project must be approved by the Foundation.
• Grant recipients are required to submit annual progress reports for every
year in which Jerome Foundation funds are used to support the project.
Upon completion of the project, a final financial and narrative report and
DVD or digital copy of the project must be submitted to the Foundation.
Grantees who do not submit final reports are ineligible to apply for additional
support from the Jerome Foundation until the report has been submitted.
• Grants are considered taxable income. Grantees must provide a social
security number to the Foundation and will receive a 1099 for any year in
which grant funds are received. All grantees are listed in the Jerome
Foundation's annual tax return, which is a public document and is posted on
the Foundation's website. |

Other Restrictions |
• Artists apply as individuals, or as two-person teams with equal responsibility as co-directors, to the Foundation. This program does not accept fiscal sponsors.
• Applicants must live in the five boroughs of New York City at the time of application and have lived in that location at least one year prior to the application deadline.
• Applicants must be individual emerging filmmakers. This program is not open to organizations. Emerging filmmakers show significant potential; have some evidence of professional achievement but not a substantial record of accomplishment; and are recognized as emerging artists by other artists, curators, producers, critics, and arts administrators. If you need more information on eligibility, please consult www.jeromefdn.org or contact Foundation staff.
• Applicants must have total creative control of the projects for which support is requested. The applicant is usually identified as the Director and may wear other hats, such as producer, writer, editor, etc. Producers, editors, crew people and writers (who are not in creative control of the project) are not eligible to apply.
• Applicants who have received a grant in the past must have completed the supported project and filed a final report in order to be eligible for another grant.
• Students in K-12 educational programs are not eligible for Jerome Foundation support. In general, individuals enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degree programs are not eligible, with one exception. If an artist enrolls in an undergraduate or graduate degree program or takes classes while maintaining a current and active professional practice of creating and presenting work to the public, she/he is eligible.

Selection Process/Criteria |
For the purpose of thoughtful review, the Foundation convenes a Film and Video Panel three times each year in New York City. The panel is composed of artists, curators and other specialists within the New
York City Film and video community. The Foundation aims for diversity in opinion and training, and replaces one panel member per year for the purpose of rotating points of view. The panel recommends to the Foundation projects that reflect great potential. The Foundation's Board of Directors makes all final decisions on grant awards. |
Notification Process |
Applicants will be notified of decisions no
later than December 31. Letters to all applicants are sent within two weeks of the Board meeting. Please do
not contact the Foundation to inquire about the status of an application unless you
have not heard by the published notification deadline. |
