Description of Program The Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program at Lassen Volcanic National Park offers amateur and professional artists an opportunity to pursue their particular art form in the park’s inspiring environment. The program seeks to:

1. Provide opportunities for artists to deepen their connection with Lassen through artistic process and immersion.
2. Create new connections to Lassen Volcanic National Park through individual works of art.
3. Further awareness of specific park themes through artistic and literary expression.

Conditions/Public Service Requirements Participating artists will coordinate with the park Volunteer-in-Parks (VIP) program manager to determine the details of his/her residency. In participation with the AIR program, artists will provide the following:

• Become and serve as a volunteer of Lassen Volcanic National Park for the duration residency.
• Complete residency prior to October 31, 2018.
• Donate at least one original piece of artwork representative of their artistic medium produced during their stay at Lassen Volcanic National Park. The donated artwork will become property of the National Park Service and will not be returned*.
• Complete at least one 45-minute demonstration or program for the public on his/her medium during residency. Park staff will assist the AIR with developing a program to meet the artist’s medium, interest, and experience. Programs can be a demonstration, talk, walk/hike, or performance.
*Artwork Release to the National Park Service
The National Park Service will have the right to reproduce, prepare derivative works of, distribute or display the donated artwork in whole or in part, for government and non-government purposes, in any manner or media, in perpetuity, and in all languages throughout the world.

Description of Support or Services The AIR program offers artists the opportunity to live and work in Lassen Volcanic National Park through a volunteer residency program. To support its AIRs, Lassen Volcanic National Park provides the following:

• Lodging for a period of up to four weeks. Housing options include a campsite or RV site, seasonal quarters, or a backcountry cabin.
• Exposure which may include: park publications, social media platforms, or exhibition in the park and/or at a partner gallery.
• A free park entrance pass, accepted at Lassen Volcanic National Park and Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.
• A stipend may be available for supplies.
• A possible opportunity to sell or obtain commission on artwork through the park’s non-profit partner, Lassen Association or concessioner, California Guest Services.
• Opportunity to participate in the park’s annual Art & Wine Event.

A cover letter describing your medium and how you intend to use it to depict Lassen.
A brief resume explaining your background and experience.
A sample of your artistic work:
Visual artists: Five but no more than 10 images
Writers: No more than five examples, each no longer than four pages. Excerpts from longer pieces, with a general explanation of the original piece, will be accepted
Audio or Digital media: No more than three examples, each no longer than 10 minutes in duration

Selection Process/Criteria The selected artist(s) will be chosen by a panel of park staff. Selections are based on artistic merit, purpose of proposed artwork, and relevancy to park themes. Additional themes such as wildfire or dark skies may be presented in each annual AIR opportunity announcement.

Geology
Lassen Volcanic National Park is a dynamic volcanic landscape, providing an awe-inspiring glimpse of the Earth’s seething power, above and below ground.

Human Activity
Stories of human experience from prehistoric to present day are reflected in the cultural resources of Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Biodiversity
Diverse natural systems coexist in Lassen Volcanic National Park due to the intersection of three distinct geographic provinces. Study and research of these ecosystems furthers understanding about the changing ecological health of the regions, national, and our planet.

Wilderness
Lassen’s wilderness provides outstanding opportunities for self-discovery within wild soundscapes, natural darkens, and relatively undisturbed ecosystems.

Pathways
Lassen Volcanic National park is part of a network of social and natural pathways that connects the park and its values to surrounding resources and partners.
