Mission Statement |
The Community-Word Project (CWP) is a New York City based arts-in-education organization that seeks to increase the literacy and leadership of at-risk public school youth by integrating creative expression and community-building into their classroom curricula. The Community-Word Project's goal is to give young people the life skills and safe space that they need to become active citizens. We achieve our objective through a three-pronged approach focusing on educational objectives, personal objectives and community-building.
In CWP workshops young people develop the academic, collaborative and creative skills to bring forth their concerns and ideas to a greater public. |

Description of Program |
Teaching Artist Training and Internship Program (TATIP) entails a rigorous, 25-week curriculum designed to prepare practicing artists to transfer their talent to the classroom and provides supervised on-the-job experience with classroom teachers. CWP also conducts Summer Institute, a nationally acclaimed professional development intensive for Teaching Artists who have at least two years of experience in the classroom. Summer Institute broadens Teaching Artists' skills and creates a national dialogue of innovative practice.
Successful arts education residencies rely on the enthusiasm and expertise of highly-trained Teaching Artists who are dedicated to building community. TATIP helps professional artists develop the skills needed to work effectively with classroom teachers to reach kids in New York City's Title I schools and public libraries. Graduates of TATIP serve as a sustainable resource that brings art, creativity, confidence, and stability into the lives of thousands of kids. |
